KS3 Maths

Mathematics is how we make sense of the physical world. Our intention is to deliver a learning journey that inspires curiosity and enables students to be fluent and confident mathematicians.  All students will have the chance to experience success and will enjoy being challenged as they develop as critical thinkers.

The Mathematics curriculum at Ashton Park

Ashton Park's KS3 Curriculum has been created in conjunction with the National Centre for Excellence in Teaching Mathematics (NCETM). Over time we have tailored their framework to include other research-informed ideas and better meet the needs of our students at Ashton Park School. The KS3 Maths Curriculum aims to give students an in-depth understanding of core concepts that will set them up for success at GCSE level and beyond.

Assessment of the mathematics curriculum

In mathematics there is an ongoing process to assess whether students have learned the knowledge and understanding of our intended curriculum. Students will sit two to three formal assessments each year. These assessments provide students with a range of questions that test them on their knowledge and understanding of their recent curriculum units. These assessments are then scored to decide if students are developing, secure or extending in their knowledge and understanding. To prepare for these assessments, and help students begin to build independent study habits, revision lists will be provided on Google Classroom in advance with links to our online independent study platform, Sparx. After each assessment, students will receive feedback in class, and will also take home their assessment where they can use Sparx further to work on any areas for improvement.

Supporting your child at home

The best way to support your child with mathematics at home is to demonstrate a positive and open attitude towards learning maths, and the potential challenges it may bring. Please encourage them to complete their weekly Independent Study on Sparx Maths, which is set and due every Wednesday during term time. Sparx can also be used as a revision tool at any time, and is a great revision resource for at home study. Because of this, we do not recommend buying any physical revision guides or work books. If you feel a physical book could be beneficial for your child please do get in touch.
