KS3 Resource Base

The Resource Base at Ashton Park School is a specialist provision for students with an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP) whose primary need is Speech, Language and Communication Needs (SLCN). Some students may also have a secondary need such as Autism (ASC).

Students access the Resource Base through the Local Authority consultation process, usually as part of a Key Stage transfer or annual review.

We provide a structured, supportive and predictable environment for learners who may be working below age-related expectations (often at Key Stage 2 levels in core subjects).

The Resource Base supports students to develop their communication, confidence and independence so they can successfully access school life.

Curriculum

We believe all students are entitled to a broad and balanced curriculum. Our curriculum closely mirrors that of the main school, with additional focus on developing key literacy, numeracy and communication skills.

In Key Stage 3:

  •   Students are taught English, Maths, Humanities and PSHE within the Resource Base in small groups.
  • They join mainstream classes for Science, PE, Art, Music, Drama and Design Technology.

Students typically access a blended timetable, with up to 60% of their learning taking place in the Resource Base and at least 40% in mainstream lessons. This balance is carefully planned and reviewed to meet individual needs.

Learning is supported through:

  •    Small group teaching
  •    Targeted interventions
  •    Speech and Language Therapy
  •    Opportunities for enrichment and extra-curricular activities

We use an Assess, Plan, Do, Review approach to regularly evaluate progress and consider whether students are ready to increase their access to mainstream lessons if appropriate.
